The nation's capital, also known as the "government
town" fosters the most highly educated population in Canada,
with almost 50 per cent of residents holding a post-secondary degree,
certificate or diploma. The average per capita income is estimated
at $24,000 per year, one of the five highest in the nation. Just over
half of Ottawa citizens speak English as their first language, and
one-third speak French as well. Nearly one-fifth of the city's population
is of other ethnic origins, adding life to the city's cultural community.
